My inception story on Droll Call (Ep. 8) - Arthur Meek

A recording from Arthur Meek and DJ Javerbaum's live video

This is a great reminder to self to just press ‘publish straight away’ after the live call.

I had a great chat to

on his weekly Droll Call live show where we talked TV development and the blessings of creative restrictions.

If I wanted to touch it up and add this kind of context, I could have done that in the edit. As it is, this call happened on my Substackery publication day, and it’s only now it’s coming out.

Oops!

By the way, I took the call about 1am my time, so those are my wee willy winky pajamas. I forgot my nightcap too.

Anyhow - you’ll get a bit about my background, ranging from Shakespeare’s Globe to developing derivative TV shows, to working on New Zealand’s most popular (/only) soap opera.

It gives a taste on why I’m so bullish about using Substack’s Live Show tech to spin up pilots and proof of concepts for new shows in a faff-free way.

And David rattles off the exact number of syllables in iambic pentameter… watch me nod along like I knew that (all I think about is the five feet beat… wait…

Pardon me thou bleeding piece of earth (9 syllables)

that I am meek and gentle with these butchers. (11 syllables)

we have a problem. Though he was talking sonnets and I’ve just quoted some Julius Caesar - where Shakespeare often plays around with the meter for effect. He’s pretty livid in this scene cos the man he admires most in the world is lying stabbed to death on the ground in front of him.

Back to regular schedule this Thursday!

Arthur.
